Doris Makes Irish Team While Joe McCarthy Omitted
Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has named captain Caelan Doris in his Irish roster for the autumn Tests, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.
The captain, absent from play since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, recently returned to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain whether he will be fit to play against the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.
Second row Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot injury he sustained during the opening Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.
Northern province player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash are also absent because of injury, and full-back Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing hip surgery following the Lions tour.
Leinster forward Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only uncapped player in the 34-player squad, but Irish rugby authorities states new provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "backup".
Following playing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous meeting, the team host Japan, Australia and world champions South Africa in Dublin.
"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," said Farrell, back to Ireland duty after a break to coach the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.
In a mostly familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will again compete for the first-choice number 10 position. The number 10 jersey is still available, with the two players set to face off for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship game at the Dublin venue.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half selected as Farrell opting against selecting the province's Byrne.
At number 9, the Ireland boss has picked Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test victories over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a return for Connacht's Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Murphy.
Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran group of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to deputise for the full-back at full-back.
Outside backs Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. O'Brien impressed on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over Georgia and the Lobos.
McCarthy is the sole fresh name in the Irish forwards. The loose-head prop has been in two of his province's URC league matches so far and featured in Ireland A's defeat by England in Bristol earlier this year.
McCarthy was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a cap.
Southern province lock Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those Tests, is retained, and veteran Ulster second row Iain Henderson returns after sitting out the summer matches.
Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests during the tour, is set to deputise for the captain should the captain does not regain full fitness in time to face New Zealand.
The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before flying to the US on Tuesday.
